2006 Distinguished Community Service Award Recipients, Larry and Vickie Culver

Steven and Fredda Goldfarb

The Grace Heffernan Arnold Guild is honored to present the 2006 Distinguished Community Service Award to Larry and Vickie Culver. Larry and Vickie are exemplary examples of philanthropic individuals and business leaders in our community.

Larry and Vickie Culver have been touched by, and therefore have become, a part of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center family. Larry, who founded Inn Ventures, Inc., in 1982, experienced this through one of his hotels, the Residence Inn by Marriott – Seattle Downtown/Lake Union. The hotel often acts as a home away from home for Hutchinson Center patients. As many of the patients are at the hotel for several months, members of the hotel staff become part of the Center’s care and support group.

Unlike any other hotel in the world, the "personality" of the Residence Inn by Marriott – Seattle Downtown/Lake Union reflects the emotions of Hutchinson Center patients, both high and low. Many of the patients are children who often project powerful, positive energy that makes everyone around them get caught up in their emotion.

"Because of their strength, because of their courage, years ago we became involved with the Hutch. We have seen the joy of successful treatment. We have seen families arrive with despair and go home with smiles and hope. As long as we can, we will be there for those children and those families," Larry said.

Larry earned his degree in Business, Hotel Administration from Washington State University and since has excelled in the educational and business world. He gives back to various communities and spends his volunteer time at organizations and institutions such as the Hutchinson Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Washington State University, Childhaven and Northwest Harvest.

A graduate of the University of Kansas's Education program, Vickie continues to support academia through her involvement with the College of Education at Washington State University. She also gives back through various volunteer activities with organizations including the Overlake Service League.

Presented annually, the Arnold Guild’s Distinguished Community Service Award recognizes an individual(s) or organization that has provided exceptional support in the fight against cancer. The selection is not based on monetary support, but rather on the honorees’ commitment and dedication to making a difference through personal interaction and involvement.

We are indebted to the Culver’s for their support and commitment to the Hutchinson Center’s cause, to eliminate cancer as a cause of human suffering and death.
